An Oxnard man suffered a broken right leg and a severely injured left foot Monday when he was run over after falling off the side of the trash truck he was working on.
Sacramento Vergara, 37, was standing on a running board on the side of a Valley Commercial Disposal Co. truck in a condominium complex on Tuolumne Avenue in Thousand Oaks about 11 a.m. when the accident occurred, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
Vergara was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where surgeons were trying to save his foot late Monday, family members said.
Rebecca Vergara, the victim’s sister-in-law, said Sacramento Vergara began working for the trash collector only five days ago after his auto body and painting business fell off.
“We’re just praying that everything goes fine,” Vergara said. Doctors told the family they were not sure whether they would have to amputate the man’s foot, which was badly mangled, she said.
