Cardinal Sebastiano Baggio, 79, chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church and an under-deacon of the College of Cardinals. Baggio was elevated to cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1969 after a diplomatic career that included assignments in Brazil and Chile. The cardinal was appointed the archbishop of Cagliari, Sardinia, after he headed some central departments of the church. He also had been president of the Pontifical Commission for the State of Vatican City. He was appointed chamberlain of the Roman Church by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and a year later was named an under-deacon of the College of Cardinals. With his death, the College of Cardinals is reduced to 152 members, of which 110 are under 80 years of age and qualified to participate in the election of a Pope.
