EN ROUTE: Label Art from the Golden Age of Air Travel by Lynn Johnson and Michael O’Leary (Chronicle Books: $14.95; 120 pp., paperback original). Before World War II, air travel was an expensive and difficult proposition, undertaken by a select few: In 1934, “(I)t took twenty-four hours and fifty- five minutes, a change of airlines, two changes of aircraft, and a stunning fifteen stops to fly between New York and Los Angeles.” The fledgling commercial airlines printed their logos on luggage tags and stickers, in an effort to make flying seem glamorous and elegant. The striking Art Deco designs reproduced in this enjoyable book prove they succeeded.
