Boris Yeltsin and Crisis in Russia

Henry A. Kissinger’s “The Perils of Giving Yeltsin All the Money He Can Use,” (Opinion, March 21), offers an objective, cool-headed approach to the crisis in Russia. Contrast this to the nervous Clinton Administration’s increasingly animated push for more aid dollars to Russia.
Encouraging the “re-imperialization of Russia,” as coined by Kissinger, portends a return to hostile colonialism with severe implications for the newly independent nations (of the former Soviet Union), for the U.S. and for the rest of the world.
Ukraine has resisted U.S. pressure to transfer leftover Soviet nuclear weapons to Russia. These weapons are a vital bargaining chip against Russian imperialism. The citizens and the elected officials of Ukraine have pledged to be nuclear-free.
The U.S. must recognize the current status of all the independent, sovereign nations of the former Soviet Union and not yield to the habituated desire for the simplicity of an obsolete monolith.
