Michael Woo

The quote attributed to me in The Times’ profile of Michael Woo was taken completely out of context and I resent its treatment in the article (March 30).
First, I would like to point out that I spent at least 20 minutes with your reporter explaining all the reasons I support Mike Woo for mayor. I also discussed with the reporter the reasons why I believe most in the larger Asian-Pacific-American community also support his candidacy.
For example, Woo has supported increasing the number of Asian-Pacific-American officers in the LAPD pursuant to specific recommendations of the Christopher Commission. He has spoken out strongly against anti-Asian violence and stereotyping in specific, and against racial and gender intolerance in general. And he has opposed discriminatory immigration policies that unfairly impacted Latinos and Asian-Pacific-Americans.
It is unfortunate and unfair that none of these comments made it into the article. Instead, The Times seized on one comment I had heard in response to a prompt from your reporter, using it to suggest somehow that I was negatively inclined toward Mike Woo. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.
