The Tustin Relays will be dedicated to Earl Engman, a former coach and a longtime track and field official, who is suffering from cancer.
The meet begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Rancho Santiago. During a break at about 1 p.m., meet organizers will present Engman a plaque, thanking him for his many years of service to the sport.
Engman, a resident of Orange, just missed a spot on the 1948 Olympic team as a triple-jumper. Later, he coached for 24 years in Santa Ana schools, spending 14 seasons as Santa Ana High track coach. He led the Saints to two Southern Section team championships and eight Sunset League titles. His career dual meet record at Santa Ana was 100-26.
In 1974, he moved into the administration at Santa Ana, leaving coaching behind for good.
But he never left the playing fields completely. He was meet manager for numerous section and State meets and also officiated many other sports, including football and swimming.
Only recently has he begun to slow his hectic schedule of officiating.
