Rain Washes Out Northridge Softball

SACRAMENTO — Despite the efforts of a dozen Cal State Sacramento softball fans who worked two hours on a soggy diamond, rain Saturday afternoon forced cancellation of the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against Cal State Northridge.
The opener was scoreless after two innings when the rains came and the infield began to take on the characteristics of the nearby American River.
The doubleheader will not be rescheduled. “Basically, the way the rule reads in our league is you don’t make it up,” Northridge Coach Gary Torgeson said.
Second-ranked Northridge (32-3-1, 8-0 in conference play) is in a virtual tie for first with No. 11 Sacramento (27-10, 9-1) in conference play. Torgeson was not disappointed with the cancellation.
“My philosophy is to play. I wanted to see how we were going to play (against Sacramento),” Torgeson said. “But . . . things can go wrong because of the weather.”
Northridge, riding a 13-game winning streak, faces Fresno State today in a WAC doubleheader.
