A surprising number of state legislators have begun to support anti-immigrant legislation much more radical than their colleagues have traditionally formulated in decades past. The object is not just to prevent the arrival of more immigrants but to repress those who are already here.
Behind this campaign in California is a growing wave of anti-immigrant sentiment, (blaming) this sector for the economic problems of the state.
All this is taking place without taking into account that the tax contributions made by immigrants are radically greater than what they receive in benefits. Moreover, the great majority of immigrants work and comply with the law.
In the next year, just in the state of California, 3 million adults will qualify for naturalization. The more we hesitate to take this step, the more we jeopardize our national future.
