WORLD IN BRIEF : EGYPT : 500 Arrests Follow Attack on Minister

More than 500 suspected Muslim extremists were rounded up in the Cairo area for questioning in the attempted assassination of Information Minister Safwat Sharif outside his home Tuesday. The minister’s left hand was injured by flying glass, and his driver and bodyguard suffered serious bullet wounds. A police official said security forces seized 320 people in Giza, north of Cairo, which has many poor neighborhoods where members of the extremist group Gamaa al Islamiya, or the Islamic Group, have previously taken refuge. An additional 185 were arrested in other districts in the capital area, he said.
