Jason Barreda’s role in Thursday’s track meet against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame was pretty simple, according to Loyola High track Coach Greg Wells.
“You win, we win,” Wells told the junior before the start of the 3,200-meter race.
With the meet’s outcome still in doubt, Barreda pulled away midway in the race to win in 10 minutes, 5.7 seconds. Earlier, Barreda won the 800 in 2:03.1 and the 1,600 in 4:35.7.
As it turned out, Barreda’s victories were more than enough to propel the Cubs to a 78-49 victory in the Mission League meet at Loyola.
Loyola (8-0, 7-0) won its 37th meet in a row and clinched its fifth consecutive league title. The Cubs will compete in league finals Friday at Cal State Northridge.
Justin Sanders ran the 110 high hurdles in 15.0, Jerome Henry timed 39.4 in the 300 intermediate hurdles and Matt Pentecost measured 46 feet, 6 1/2 inches in the shotput to lead Loyola.
Other Loyola winners included Mike Ratkovic in the 400 (50.3), Clark Dizon in the triple jump (40-5) and Kevin Kneafsey in the pole vault (14-3).
