Glendale : Pig Owner Seeks Variance
The owner of a 70-pound potbellied pig asked the City Council on Tuesday to consider changing an ordinance that prohibits keeping farm animals in the city.
Randy Jahelka has been cited by the Glendale Humane Society for illegally keeping the pig at his home in a semirural neighborhood at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Jahelka said the pig, which he bought at a Glendale pet store in October and named Hamburger, is his friend.
At least 24 other cities in California, including Burbank, have amended their laws to permit the miniature pigs, which became popular as pets in a fleeting fad several years ago.
Council members asked City Atty. Scott Howard to study the request.
