Dr. Gerhard Schmidt; Aided Marrow Recipients

Gerhard M. Schmidt, 44, associate director of hematology and bone marrow transplantation at the City of Hope National Medical Center, died Sunday in Duarte of cancer.
Schmidt specialized in preventing and treating complications from bone marrow transplants, including pneumonia. He was also known for pioneering work in quality of life for cancer outpatients.
A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Schmidt earned his medical degree from the University of Freiburg in West Germany and later received postgraduate training at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
