‘From Hollywood to Hanoi’ to Open Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival

The eighth annual Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival, the largest event of its kind on the West Coast, will present more than 100 films in more than 40 separate programs between May 13 and May 23 at five different venues.
Opening with Tiana Thi Thanh Hga’s “From Hollywood to Hanoi,” a bittersweet documentary account of its maker’s first return to her native Vietnam since she was a child, the festival will be more inclusive than ever before, spotlighting the exciting New Taiwanese Cinema represented by Tsai Ming-liang’s “Rebels of the Neon Gods” and Hsu Hsiao-ming’s “Dust of Angels,” both harrowing portraits of disaffected youth.
The screening sites are the Japan America Theater, 244 S. San Pedro; LACE, 1804 Industrial St.; the Grande Theater in the Sheraton Grande Theater, 333 S. Figueroa, the Sunset 5 at Sunset and Crescent Heights, and UCLA’s Melnitz Theater.
