ROUNDUP : Victory Over Poly Marks Sylmar’s 5th Shutout in Row

Carlos Velazco pitched Sylmar High’s fifth shutout in a row in a 4-0 victory over Poly on Thursday in Sun Valley. The victory enabled the Spartans (16-7, 12-2 in league play) to clinch a share of the East Valley League title.

Andy Camarillo, Oscar Mendoza and Shane Rankin each had two hits for the Spartans, who have pitched shutouts in six of their past eight games.

In other high school baseball games:

San Fernando 4, Kennedy 3--Vince Guerrero scored from second when Kennedy catcher David Bourne’s attempted pickoff went into center field in the ninth inning, giving the Tigers a North Valley League victory at San Fernando.

Kennedy (20-3, 11-3) had won 15 in a row and is ranked ninth in the state.

Tony Cabrera was three for four with a triple for San Fernando (9-9-1, 7-7).

Chatsworth 6, Reseda 0--Harry Kenoi pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine for Chatsworth in the West Valley League game at Reseda. Bryan LaCour hit a three-run home run for the Chancellors (17-6, 10-4). Carlos Nunez singled and doubled for Reseda (2-16, 0-14).

North Hollywood 4, Grant 3--Juan Zavala’s one-out double in the seventh drove in Elias Saucedo with the winning run in the East Valley League contest.

Grant (6-13, 4-8) scored three unearned runs in the first, but Carlos Sandoval shut down the Lancers after that. Sandoval (2-0) pitched a two-hitter, struck out five and walked three.

Birmingham 2, Monroe 1--Steve Brown of Birmingham (4-13-2, 3-11) outdueled Robert Ballester of Monroe (15-4, 12-2) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Cleveland 6, Granada Hills 1--Scott Foli was two for three with four RBIs, leading the Cavaliers (5-13-1, 4-10) in a North Valley League game. Mike Flegenheimer was three for three and Mike Immken and Tim Maguire each had two hits for Cleveland.

Gaby Halcovich and Rob Cohen each had two hits for Granada Hills.

Canoga Park 6, Van Nuys 1--Louis Meza pitched a four-hitter for Canoga Park (6-12, 3-11) in the Mid-Valley League game. Glenn Davis, David Vargas and Gus Lomeli each had two hits.

Verdugo Hills 5, Wilson 3--Matt Fitzgerald hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the Dons (7-12, 3-3) in a Northern League game.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Canyons 5, Pierce 1--Kevin Foderaro pitched a six-hitter and Andy Shaw hit his 12th home run for Canyons in a Western State Conference game.

Foderaro (7-3), who struck out four and walked one, retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. Heath McElwee and Ted Keister each had two hits for Canyons (28-8, 25-4). Jason Cohen homered for Pierce (21-15, 18-11).

Cuesta 20, Valley 7--The loss at Cuesta means that Valley (20-15, 19-10) must defeat Canyons on Saturday, the last day of WSC play, to assure itself of second place. If Pierce beats Santa Monica and Valley loses, Pierce will finish second by virtue of having swept its three games against Valley.

Ventura 11, Santa Monica 2--Ventura was led by Jorge Macias (four for five) and Jeff Hook (three for four, three RBIs) in a WSC game at Santa Monica.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Royal 3, Newbury Park 2--Freshman Leah Barraso of Royal (10-10-1, 5-7) hit a home run and scored the go-ahead run on an error in the sixth inning of a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

MEN’S TENNIS

Three Pierce College singles players and one Pierce and one Glendale doubles team advanced to the round of 16 in the Southern California regional individual championships at Southwestern College.

For Pierce, Al Martinez, John Rom and Philip Leonhardt won singles matches.

In doubles, Leonhardt and Vanja Nadali of Pierce and Tom Huynh and Brian Wildason of Glendale won.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. L.A. Baptist, 8-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-13--The Crusaders (15-1, 8-0) rallied to win the Alpha League championship.
