Robert De Niro; Painter, Father of Actor

Robert De Niro, 71, an accomplished painter and father of the actor. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., De Niro studied with the painter Hans Hoffmann and attended Black Mountain College in Asheville, N.Y. He had his first one-man show in 1946 in the New York City gallery of Peggy Guggenheim, called Art of this Century. During a four-decade career, De Niro was represented by the galleries Charles Egan, Poindexter, Zabriskiez, Graham Modern and, currently, Salander O’Reilly. His work is exhibited by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum and by Washington’s Hirshhorn Museum. His only child, actor Robert De Niro, frequently gave friends his father’s paintings as gifts. On Monday in New York of cancer.
