TRAVELING IN STYLE : Side Trips : High Notes

It’s a far cry from a limousine to Carnegie Hall, but the high-speed gondola up Ajax Mountain in Aspen, Colo., has a musical destination as well. As part of the annual Aspen Music Festival, celebrating its 45th season this year from June 25 through Aug. 22, student players perform chamber music high on the mountain on Saturday afternoons. The gondola ride costs $11 for adults and $6 for children, round-trip, but hardy music-lovers can also hike or bike up. Admission is free.
There’s more outdoor music at Aspen: Concerts by such performers as Andre Watts and Tito Puente are presented nightly in the city’s 1,700-seat Music Tent. Ticket prices range from $16 to $31, but on warm evenings the tent flaps are rolled up and ticketless aficionados may listen from the adjacent lawn.
