Long Beach Schedules 4 Operas

Four operas, to be performed at three different locations, make up the 1993-94 season of Long Beach Opera.
Already announced, the company’s second presentation of Bizet’s “Carmen,” with Alice Baker and James Schwisow in principal, will be given in English outdoors at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. Performances are scheduled Aug. 14, 19 and 21, all at 8 p.m.
The late John Cage’s “Europeras 3 & 4,” staged by the composer’s longtime associate, Andrew Culver, will be performed in the 800-seat Center Theater at the Long Beach Convention Center, Nov. 13 and 14.
Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov,” sung in Russian, will be given in Terrace Theater at the Convention Center, March 30 and April 2. Steven Sloan, music director of the Long Beach company, will conduct; Christopher Alden will be stage director.
Three performances of Verdi’s “Falstaff,” in English, will close the season, April 24, 27 and 30, all in Center Theater. Staging will be the work of the French directing team of Moshe Leiser and Patrice Courier; Sloan will conduct.
