Promoters to Appeal Ruling

Two former promoters for boxer Larry Holmes say they will appeal a judge’s dismissal of their case in which they alleged that the former heavyweight champion breached a four-fight contract.
U.S. District Judge J. Spencer Letts in Los Angeles dismissed the case in mid-trial because of a question about how the deal was structured, said Bob Rey, a Riverside fight promoter and one of the plaintiffs.
The judge said Holmes could keep the $125,000 that Rey and Jason Schlessinger paid to promote four fights. They had been seeking $15 million in damages.
The promoters allege that Holmes walked away from the deal after a single fight. Their company, LBA Associates Inc. in Newport Beach, subsequently filed for bankruptcy reorganization.
Rey said he will appeal the decision. “There is a great sense of frustration on the part of myself and my co-plaintiff,” Rey said.
Holmes could not be reached for comment.
