Lotus to Buy California Database Firm: Lotus Development Corp. of Cambridge, Mass., said it will acquire Approach Software Corp., a Redwood City firm that makes database programs. Lotus, which had sales of $900 million last year, is best known for its 1-2-3 spreadsheet software. It said it expects to pay as much as $20 million for the privately held Approach.
