Notes on a Scorecard - June 9, 1993

Some things the Kings need to do to mount a comeback in the Stanley Cup finals: --Persuade Montreal Coach Jacques Demers to give the Canadiens’ highly deserving backup goaltender, Andre Racicot, the opportunity to start instead of Patrick Roy tonight. . . .

--Reverse a recent trend and take a 3-0 or 2-0 lead. . . .

--Have Tomas Sandstrom put seven shots on goal and Wayne Gretzky six, as they did in Game 4, and take your chances they will score this time. . . .

--Forecheck the young Canadien defensemen and create turnovers in the Montreal zone. . . .

--Get Dave Taylor well enough to play. . . .

--Cheer up Darryl Sydor after he did the best he could in a difficult situation, only to be unlucky enough to have John LeClair’s shot deflect off his shin guard into the net. . . .

--Give Jimmy Carson, who looks as though he is ready to score a goal or two, even more ice time than Monday night. . . .

--Be aggressive on the power play instead of trying to make the perfect pass and set up the perfect shot. . . .

--Pay no attention to the ghosts in the Montreal Forum. . . .

--Under no circumstances, allow the game to last longer than 60 minutes. . . .

Those booing Darryl Strawberry at Dodger Stadium should be aware that Chicago Cub shortstop Shawon Dunston, who underwent similar back surgery before Strawberry did last season, still hasn’t appeared in a game. . . .

Of course, Strawberry doesn’t help his cause by talking about being voted into the Hall of Fame when he is hitting .129. . . .

If the San Diego Padres trade Fred McGriff, a fan boycott might be in order. . . .

UCLA has 12 former players in the major leagues, among them Seattle Mariner second baseman Rich Amaral, who could follow Eric Karros as a rookie of the year. . . .

A couple of wise draft choices were Montclair Prep third baseman Brad Fulmer by the Montreal Expos and Brigham Young pitcher Ryan Hancock by the Angels. . . .

Steve Cooke of the Pittsburgh Pirates is among the few good left-handed pitching prospects in the majors. . . .

Tommy Morrison would have a much better chance against Lennox Lewis than against Riddick Bowe. . . .

The surprise Monday night in Las Vegas was that Morrison waged a smart, disciplined fight and was able to win without knocking down George Foreman during the 12 rounds. . . .

This would be a good time for the 44-year-old Foreman, who didn’t take a beating, to retire. . . .

Fight manager-trainer Lou Duva calls Bowe, who has defended his title against two tomato cans, the “Brooklyn Dodger.” . . .

Thumbs up to UCLA Coach Terry Donahue, who will conduct a free football clinic for youngsters 8-13 Saturday at Spaulding Field. Signups are filled for this one, but another is scheduled in August. . . .

Thumbs down on CIF administrators for the way they handled the cancellation of the State track and field meet Saturday at Cerritos College and pity the kids who had been looking forward all season to competing. . . .

It will be awhile before tickets are put on sale for USC’s football games against newly signed opponent Colorado in 2000 at the Coliseum and 2002 at Boulder. . . .

Pat Haden will conduct the ninth annual Ricky Bell Memorial Scholarship Fund golf outing and dinner-sports auction June 18 at Brookside in Pasadena. . . .

The controversy over the naming of the new arena in Anaheim reminds me that the Angels refused to call their home ballpark Dodger Stadium from 1962-65. To this day, it appears in the Angels’ media guide as Chavez Ravine. . . .

Georgia Tech, featuring former Esperanza High star David Newhan, is the first team to accept an invitation to play in the Anaheim Hilton & Towers’ College Baseball Classic next February at Cal State Fullerton. . . .

The Orange County Sports Assn. has joined the drive to put George Yardley, the Newport Harbor High graduate who was the first player to score 2,000 points during an NBA season, in the basketball Hall of Fame. . . .

Here it is June 9 and the NBA finals already are about to begin. . . .

I will remember Drazen Petrovic for his three-point bombs. . . .

The NBA draft will be conducted June 30 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich., home of the Detroit Pistons. . . .

The signing of Larry Brown by the Indiana Pacers means Brown will have coached each of the former ABA teams that are in the NBA--Indiana, Denver, San Antonio, and New Jersey. . . .
