California Plaza Series Presents Musician-Poet

South African musician-poet Mzwakhe Mbuli will perform free concerts June 25 at noon and 8 p.m. as part of the California Plaza’s Watercourt outdoor series.

Often called the “people’s poet” of South Africa, Mbuli combines liberation poetry with traditional township music. Although his music was once banned in his own country, Mbuli gained international recognition with “Unbroken Spirit,” a recording composed without pen or paper in a South African prison. His latest album is “Resistance Is Defense.”
