BOYLE HEIGHTS : Puente Center Opens Job Referral Office

Puente Learning Center opened a job referral office this month to help students who go through its programs find employment.
The referral office, made possible by a grant from the Whitecap Foundation, connects students with area businesses that have openings, said Puente spokeswoman Amanda Fernandez.
The center, at 501 S. Boyle Ave., was initially designed to help find full-time clerical jobs for students who complete Puente’s job-training program, but the need for jobs among all its students led organizers to open it to other students, Fernandez said.
Puente, which stands for People United to Enrich the Neighborhood Through Education, enrolls 1,400 adults in English as a Second Language, job training and computer classes and also has an after-school tutoring program for high school students.
