Gusti Huber; Actress Played Mother in ‘Diary of Anne Frank’

Gusti Huber, 78, the actress who played the mother in “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Considered the first lady of Austrian theater in the 1930s and 1940s, Miss Huber came to the United States after marrying an Army captain she met during the liberation of Austria in World War II. She played Edith Frank in the Broadway version of the account of a Jewish family hiding from Nazis in an Amsterdam garret. The play, based on the diary of a young girl who eventually died in a concentration camp, won the Pulitzer Prize and a Critics Circle Award in 1956. She retired from acting in 1961 and devoted her time to lecturing in New York high schools on the legacy of Anne Frank. On Monday in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., of heart failure.
