Bomb Found in 17-Year-Old’s Car

Police discovered a homemade bomb inside the car of a juvenile drunken driving suspect early Sunday morning, and sources with the Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad say devices like it have been used to blow up mailboxes in the West Valley.
The bomb--two M-180s, which are powerful illegal fireworks, mounted on a board with a battery and timer attached to it--was removed by members of the bomb squad, said Sgt. Brian Hospodar of the department’s West Valley Division. The suspect carrying the bomb is 17 years old, he added. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
An M-180 is equivalent to about one-third of a stick of dynamite.
Bomb squad members told West Valley Division officers that pipe bombs have been used several times recently to blow up mailboxes in the area, Hospodar said.
