World IN BRIEF : INDIA : 8 Killed as Police Fire on Protesters

At least eight supporters of India’s ruling Congress Party were killed when police opened fire on violent protesters in Communist-led West Bengal state. Police said that supporters of Mamta Banerjee, a senior Congress regional leader, surrounded the headquarters of the state government in Calcutta. Banerjee, a feisty member of Parliament, has been a bitter critic of the Communist government, accusing it of corruption and failure to develop the state economically.
