More than 2,000 mountain bike racers, including many of the world’s best, are scheduled to compete in California’s biggest bicycle event when the Grundig World Cup tour stops at Mammoth Lakes this weekend.
Competition begins today with the women’s pro cross-country race at 8:30 a.m. and the men’s at 10:30. The pro downhill and dual slalom events will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. The downhill eliminator, an event designed by Mammoth promoters and not included in the World Cup circuit, will start Sunday at 7 a.m.
The cross-country course is a 12.8-mile loop on Mammoth Mountain. The men go three laps, the women two. The downhill course starts at 11,053 feet at the summit and drops more than 2,000 feet.
Thomas Frischknecht of Switzerland, ranked No. 1 in the world in cross-country, is expected to be challenged by leading Americans Daryl Price, David Wiens and Ned Overend, who at 38 is Mammoth’s defending champion. The leading women are Americans Juli Furtado, Ruthie Mattes and Susan Mattei.
In the downhill, top-ranked Stefano Migliorini of Italy will be challenged by Dave Cullinan and John Tomac. Leading the women are Kim Sonier, 1992 world champion; Missy Giove and Penny Davidson.
