David Dotson, a second-year freshman tailback who gained 48 yards in nine carries Sunday against North Carolina, came to USC with impressive stats.
At Valley View High in Moreno Valley, Dotson set five California high school records.
As a senior during the 1991 season, Dotson ran for 3,544 yards, averaging 10 yards per carry and scoring 46 touchdowns. In one game, he ran for 507 yards in 27 carries.

Houston Coach Kim Helton, whose team will play USC on Saturday at the Coliseum, wasn’t hired until last May and missed Houston’s spring practice. He didn’t even meet some of his players until preseason practice started this summer.
As offensive coordinator at the University of Miami from 1979-82, Helton, 45, coached Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde.
Helton’s son, Clay, a junior quarterback, transferred this week from Auburn to Houston. Because Auburn is on probation, he is immediately eligible, but not likely to play much this year.

USC’s offensive line--tackles Tony Boselli and Norberto Garrido, guards Joel Crisman and Kris Pollack and center Craig Gibson--averages 6-5 1/2 and 283 pounds.
