Alhambra : Carjacking Suspect Identified

Manuel Madrid, 19, of Alhambra has been identified as the suspected carjacker who was shot and killed by a plainclothes Alhambra police officer in an unmarked police car Sept. 10, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
Madrid approached the officer as he stopped at Commonwealth and Orange Grove avenues about 2:40 a.m., and asked what the time was.
After the officer answered, Madrid put a large knife to his head and demanded the car, the spokesman said. The officer then shot twice through the open window. Both bullets hit Madrid.
Before approaching the car, Madrid had been sitting on a bus bench with two other men. The pair fled after the shooting but were later detained by Alhambra police for questioning.
Alhambra Police Chief Russell Siverling said a preliminary investigation showed the officer acted appropriately.
The Sheriff’s Department is assisting Alhambra police with the shooting investigation. Police have not named the officer, who is a member of a street crime task force.
