The ‘60s, the ‘80s

Re “If You Liked the ‘60s, You’ll Love the ‘90s” by Willie Morris, Opinion, Sept. 5:

As Willie Morris gushes on about the lost ‘60s, maybe he should recall that while the ‘60s was a “time of immense pristine hope and idealism,” it was also the period when America lost a great deal of its moral bearings--a time when the family unit was declared optional and moral relativism placed new taboos on declaring many criminal behaviors “wrong.”

And as Morris leads the PC choral brigade in decrying the ‘80s as “perhaps the greediest and most cynical years in our history,” one might ask if maybe the cynical ones aren’t those like Morris who, despite good intentions, won’t acknowledge that the ‘80s were a period of real growth where the vast majority of the U.S. population benefited and led comfortable and productive lives by any world standard.
