Van Nuys : Chatsworth Vet Receives Sentence

A veterinarian who pled no contest to allowing his son to illegally practice medicine at his Chatsworth clinic was sentenced to 30 days of community service on Tuesday.
Dr. Steven Abrams, 65, pleaded no contest last month to a single misdemeanor count of aiding and abetting the illegal practice of veterinary medicine.
Los Angeles Municipal Commissioner Harold S. Vites ordered Abrams to do his volunteer work at the county Department of Animal Control in Agoura.
The vet and his son, Alan Abrams, had been charged with fooling clients by allowing the younger Abrams to pass himself off as a doctor at the Animal Medical Center of Chatsworth, 21032 Devonshire St.
State investigators uncovered evidence--from records, pet owners and employees--that Alan Abrams was allowed to perform surgical procedures on animals.
Alan Abrams, 31, pleaded no contest last week to four misdemeanor counts of practicing medicine without a license, and Vites immediately sentenced him to six months in jail, a term he will begin serving in January.
