COSTA MESA — Robert Hudson rushed for 188 yards in 21 carries and three touchdowns Friday as Calvary Chapel used a strong second half to defeat Olympic League rival Brethren Christian, 30-13, at Orange Coast College.
The Eagles (4-4, 3-1) pulled into a tie with Brethren Christian (7-2, 3-1) atop the league standings. Ontario Christian would be 3-1 by defeating Whittier Christian today.
Trailing, 13-7, at halftime, the Eagles took advantage of their best field position to that point, at the Warrior 49, and drove 10 plays to a touchdown. Hudson’s two-yard run put the hosts ahead, 14-13.
Hudson had scored the opening Eagle touchdown on a 31-yard run in the second quarter.
The ensuing kickoff was recovered by the Eagles’ Chris Tuiolosega at the Warrior 21, and Hudson scored his third touchdown on the next play. A two-point conversion made it 22-13.
Brethren Christian fumbled on their next drive, setting the stage for Eagle Trevor Morris to run two yards for a touchdown to ice the game.
Morris finished with 71 yards in 15 carries.
Brethren Christian quarterback Reggie Davis began the scoring with a one yard run in the opening quarter. The senior also connected with Robert Kogler for a 12-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.
Kent Cuellar gained 61 yards on nine carries for the Warriors.
