Florida State’s Bobby Bowden and his son, Terry Bowden of Auburn, became the first father and son to be named finalists for the Football Writers Assn. of America coach of the year award.

Ohio State’s John Cooper and Kansas State’s Bill Snyder are the other finalists.

At the request of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) the U.S. Justice Department has agreed to look into whether an agreement between a coalition of college football conferences and major postseason bowls violates antitrust laws.
