Gurney Takes Lead in Senior Bowling

Barry Gurney of West Hills, who has been ailing since the bowling tour hit Florida last month, was feeling better Thursday night after charging from 20th place to first in the $190,000 Ebonite Senior Championship at Venice, Fla.
Gurney finished with a 246 game to take a one-pin lead over Jimmy Certain. Gurney credited one of his chief rivals, John Hricsina, for his second-round surge. “John suggested I change my thumb pitch and it’s paying off,” Gurney said.
The top 71 scorers will make the first cut to the semifinal round Saturday.
