BURBANK — A truck hauling vegetables to a downtown Los Angeles produce market careened off the Ventura Freeway early Saturday, closing the eastbound lanes for several hours while road crews unloaded the truck and moved it out of the way.
The exact cause of the 1:50 a.m. accident west of Buena Vista Street was under investigation, but the driver of a small car involved was charged with felony driving while intoxicated, Officer Bill Granados of the California Highway Patrol said.
The arrested man, 23-year-old Craig Atzberger of Tujunga, was taken to County-USC Medical Center with minor injuries and was expected to be released to County Jail late Saturday, Granados said.
The truck driver, whose name was unavailable, was treated at the accident scene for minor injuries and released, Granados said. His Certified Freight Lines truck was carrying 50,000 pounds of squash, cherry tomatoes and celery, but the produce remained contained within the trailer, Granados said.
