OUTLOOK
The Spartans should move up a notch this season. A year ago, Harris was hired late and it showed in his team’s performance. They struggled through their nonleague schedule, then improved in league play. “We had Los Alamitos by three points last season, then let it go in the second half,” Harris said. “Our kids will play harder this year.” Harris has had a full year to improve the program. He has some talent to work with, though some of it is quite young. Bernards is a good shooter and averaged 13 points. He’ll be the guy the Spartans look to in the clutch. The front line is tall, which counts for something. Just what is to be seen. “Yeah, we’re real green up front,” Harris said. Chenowith has plenty of raw talent and could be a dominant player in time. Harris wants to get all the mileage possible out of him, so look for Chenowith to see plenty of playing time. Benge has only one year of basketball experience, having played on the junior varsity last season. The Spartans have not had a winning season in more than a decade and have finished last five times since 1986. So the last two seasons (they were 11-12 in 1991-92) have been a significant step forward. But there’s room for plenty more. SCHEDULE
