OUTLOOK
Pacifica players are playing for their third coach in two seasons, but that doesn’t mean they won’t respond to Becker, a proven winner who led the Rancho Alamitos girls’ team to the Division III-A final last season. Nearly every coach in the Garden Grove League is picking Pacifica to win the league, which is fine with Becker. “They’re building confidence in our kids and that’s what they need right now,” he said. The Mariners are the consensus pick because all five starters are back from last year’s team, which gave unbeaten Kennedy its toughest league game. Pacifica is so deep that Vlasic, the league’s best returning player, might not start. “I have 10 kids that feel they’re good enough to start,” Becker said. “If I have to bring Vlasic off the bench to help the chemistry, I will.” Surface, a returning all-league player, is being recruited by many Division III schools. Becker said his team’s style will be similar to that of his girls’ team. “We’ll play up-tempo and put a lot of pressure on opponents.”
