Semiconductor Group Says Shortage of Chip Resins Averted: Sumitomo Chemical Co.’s recent resumption of production will head off a feared shortage of plastic resins for chips, Semiconductor Industry Assn. said. A July 4 fire shut down Sumitomo’s plant in Niihama, Japan, which supplied more than half the semiconductor industry’s resin. Anticipation of a shortage of the material, used to make chip housings, had driven up prices for the memory chips that go into personal computers.
