Jackson-Carpenter Jury Deliberating

SACRAMENTO — Jurors in the political corruption trial of former state Sen. Paul B. Carpenter and lobbyist Clayton R. Jackson completed their fifth day of deliberations Tuesday without reaching a verdict.
Jackson and Carpenter have pleaded innocent to a variety of public corruption charges issued earlier this year by a federal grand jury in Sacramento. The trial began Oct. 12 and went to the jury Nov. 22.
Prosecutors contend that Carpenter, 65, whose district covered parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties, and Jackson, 50, a San Francisco lawyer, were part of an elaborate scheme to illegally launder campaign contributions made to former state Sen. Alan Robbins (D-Van Nuys).
