CLUB REVIEW : A Delightful Break From Scenester Scene at Dresden

The more things change, the more at least one room stays the same--the venerable Dresden lounge in Los Feliz.
Although the restaurant has been around since 1940, it’s the lounge attraction, Marty and Elayne Roberts, that brings in a standing-room crowd each weekend (and some weeknights as well; they appear every night except Sunday).
The music of this husband-and-wife team, which has been performing in the piano bar for 10 years, is a delightful break from the fare at the typical scenester club.
Although they attract a hip following of film industry regulars, the attitude in the club--which hasn’t changed its faux-Teutonic decor since its inception--is more Vegas than Tinseltown.
With Marty alternating between stand-up bass and a drum kit and Elayne on piano, they perform such standards as “Mack the Knife” and “Route 66” with old-fashioned, glitzy showmanship.
With Marty winking at you as you walk in the door and Elayne smiling her way through each song, the couple emanates a welcoming warmth.

Most of the evening’s six hours of music is taken up with requests from regulars who come to hear renditions of “Blue Moon,” “Autumn in New York,” “What a Wonderful World” etc.
Although their show is clearly a lounge act, they perform with such unbridled passion that it’s one of the most endearing shows around.
