City Honors Crenshaw as Co-MVP of 4-A : High school football: Sylmar’s senior tailback shares award with Westchester’s Edwards after winning it last year.

Senior tailback Tyrone Crenshaw of Sylmar High became the first player in 13 years to win consecutive City Section 4-A Division player-of-the-year honors when he was selected co-MVP with quarterback Seka Edwards of Westchester.

Crenshaw, who led all City ballcarriers in rushing with 1,785 yards, earned solo honors as a junior after leading the Spartans to the 4-A title. Edwards and Crenshaw led their teams to the semifinals this season.

The last player to win consecutive 4-A awards was Michael Alo of Banning, in 1979 and ’80. David Wilson of Reseda, who later played at California, was selected player of the year in the now-defunct 2-A Division in 1986 and ’87.

Thirteen other players from the San Fernando Valley were selected to the two City divisional teams, including four repeat selections.

Taft tailback Jerry Brown, the 3-A player of the year last fall as a sophomore, was named to the 4-A team after the Toreadors moved to the higher division. Linebacker DaShon Polk, a junior, and senior lineman Dan Lazarovits--both members of the 3-A team in 1992--were named to the 4-A team.

San Fernando quarterback Leon Blunt made the 4-A team for the second season in a row. He was joined by two of Crenshaw’s teammates, senior linebacker Anthony Munoz and senior lineman John Gonzalez.

Two record-breakers rounded out the area 4-A selections: Kennedy senior receiver Shaun Dudra, who set a school single-season record with 59 catches, joined senior tailback Chris Shinnick of El Camino Real, who broke the school single-season rushing mark with 1,313 yards.

Reseda, which advanced to the 3-A semifinals before falling to eventual champion San Pedro, landed three seniors on the team: running back-linebacker Travion Trammel, running back-defensive back Tyrone Francis and lineman Alex Maldonado.

Sophomore quarterback Keijuan Douglas of Poly, who rushed for 515 yards and passed for 629, also made the 3-A team along with junior receiver Ryan Jones of North Hollywood.

Receiver-defensive back Bryan Castaneda of San Pedro, a senior, was the 3-A player of the year.
