Here is a partial survey of the earthquake’s impact on Southland businesses as of late Thursday:
Loss estimates
* Insured losses: Estimates approach $2 billion.
* Total damage: Estimated between $15 billion and $30 billion.
Businesses closed or damaged
Gas stations:
* Arco: Twenty-four in the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica closed.
* Mobil: Three in Northridge and North Hollywood closed.
* Unocal: Two in the West Valley area remain closed.
Financial services:
* Bank of America: Fourteen branches in the San Fernando Valley and Westside closed; 30 ATMs out of service in the Valley.
* First Interstate: Five San Fernando Valley branches closed.
* Great Western Bank: Five San Fernando Valley branches closed; only one of 14 buildings at its Chatsworth headquarters complex open; 2,900 employees idled.
* Union Bank: North Hollywood branch and Beverly Hills regional office closed.
* Wells Fargo: Devonshire-Mason branch in Chatsworth closed; temporary branch in trailer scheduled to be in operation early next week.
Brokerage houses:
* Fidelity Investments and Dreyfus Mutual Funds: Some Southern California investment centers remain closed.
Malls:
* Beverly Center: Closed; will reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday.
* Canoga Park Promenade: Closed; scheduled to reopen by Saturday.
* Fallbrook Mall: Closed; scheduled to reopen by early next week.
* Glendale Galleria: Mall open; parking structure partially closed.
* Laurel Plaza: Closed two to three weeks for repairs.
* Media City Center: Reopened.
* Northridge Fashion Center: Closed; major damage; two parking structures collapsed; may remain closed three to six months.
* Sherman Oaks Fashion Square: Closed; major damage; may remain closed several months.
* Sherman Oaks Galleria: Closed; may reopen in a month.
* Topanga Plaza: Closed; partial reopening early next week; department stores may remain closed four to six months.
* Valencia Town Center: Reopened.
Supermarkets:
* Hughes: All stores now open.
* Lucky: Three West Valley stores closed due to structural damage.
* Ralphs: Three stores in the West Valley closed due to structural damage.
* Vons: Three stores in the San Fernando Valley and one in Santa Monica will remain closed today.
Manufacturing plants:
* Hughes Aircraft: Canoga Park plant closed; 1,500 employees idled.
* Lockheed: All facilities back to normal operation.
* Rockwell International: Rocketdyne plant in Canoga Park partially reopened; 4,900 employees remain idled.
Major San Fernando Valley businesses:
* Packard Bell: Relocating from Chatsworth to Westlake Village; 1,150 employees idled.
* U.S. Postal Service: Van Nuys mail-processing center: Heavy damage, including broken water pipes and cracked floors.
* 20th Century Insurance Co.: Woodland Hills headquarters reopened.
