CRENSHAW : Free Seminar to Discuss Legal Rights

Karen Ackerson, who defended Henry K. Watson in last year’s Reginald O. Denny beating case, and eight other attorneys will address legal rights at a Saturday seminar at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ, 3045 S. Crenshaw Blvd.
The lawyers will address such issues as personal injury, contracts, renters’ rights, entertainment law and criminal law at the free two-hour seminar, which will begin at 11 a.m.
West Angeles community relations director James Thomas said the forum is intended to educate residents about their legal rights and securing legal representation.
“One of the things we’re finding is that blacks are forced into dealing with the legal system in a reactionary way,” Thomas said. “We want to make sure South-Central residents know their rights, that they know how to document things and keep records as evidence.
“What you don’t know can cost you,” he said.
The forum is a pilot project for a legal-rights center that West Angeles plans to establish, Thomas said.
