GAME OF THE WEEK : Crenshaw Puts Out Dorsey’s Lights

The only bright spot for the Dorsey boys’ basketball team Friday was when the lights went out.
In a Southern League game that had been postponed by the Northridge quake and delayed when power went out in the Dorsey gym Friday afternoon, Crenshaw rocked the Dons, 111-78.
But the lopsided score was not indicative of the fervor of the game, a rematch of last season’s City 4-A championship game.
“This did not feel like a 33-point win,” said Crenshaw forward Kristaan Johnson, who scored a game-high 26 points on nine-of-18 shooting. “They were definitely up for this game because of the rivalry. The intensity inside the gym was incredible.”
It was that competitive spirit that kept the game close throughout the first half and midway into the third quarter.
With Crenshaw comfortably ahead, 56-38, Johnson scored 11 of the Cougars’ next 13 points including two three-point plays. After a sluggish first half, Johnson came out of the locker room and scored 18 of his 26 points.
“I lost my focus in the first half and coach (Willie West) told me to ‘go out and play basketball,’ ” Johnson said.
But it was Dorsey that lost focus and players late in the second half.
With 7:15 left in the fourth quarter, Dorsey guard Ricky Blackmon, who led the Dons with 16 points, fouled out. Over the next 2:16, Sherwyn Morgan, who had 11 points, and Will Shumate did likewise.
Forward Tremaine Fowlkes had another big game for Crenshaw, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Records: Crenshaw 16-2, 5-0, Dorsey 11-6, 3-2.
