HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Alvarez and Bell Stop Kennedy in City Section Soccer Semifinal

Maynor Alvarez scored twice in leading undefeated Bell past Kennedy, 2-0, in a City Section semifinal soccer match Thursday at Bell (12-0-1).
Kennedy (15-4) had two chances to score at the 76-minute mark. Robbie Shapiro’s header on a crossing pass hit the crossbar, and Oscar Galacia’s shot on the rebound sailed just wide.
Bell’s opponent in Saturday’s final will be Belmont.
SOFTBALL
Sylmar 10, Lincoln 2--Sophomore right-hander Cherice Espinosa struck out 15 and walked one while pitching a three-hitter in a nonleague game at Sylmar.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Burbank 17, Notre Dame 1--The Bulldogs left five first-stringers at home so some of their junior varsity players could gain experience, yet still came within one set of sweeping the Knights at Sherman Oaks.
Burbank’s No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Stephan D-Angona and junior Tim Harris had the best performance of the day, dropping only two games in three sets.
GOLF
Granada Hills 370, Birmingham 426--Darren Angel fired a two-under-par 70 as Granada Hills won a Mid-Valley League match played at Hansen Dam Golf Course. Brian Varnesh also shot a 71 for the Highlanders (2-1, 1-1).
Birmingham (0-2, 0--2) was led by Scott Wells with a 77.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Taft d. Crespi 15-7, 10-15, 12-15, 18-16, 15-13--The Toreadors rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the fourth game to win their season opener. Nima Fariman had 20 kills and seven blocks and Jeff Craven added 41 assists for Taft.
