IRVINE : Fate of Westpark Bridge to Be Decided

The City Council tonight is set to decide the fate of a proposed pedestrian and bicycle bridge that would link two retail centers in the Westpark village.
The Irvine Co. agreed to build the bridge over San Diego Creek in 1990 when it received the city’s permission to construct the Westpark Plaza shopping center. Now, the company has asked the city to delete the bridge requirement from its development agreement.
City officials have raised safety concerns about the project.
The bridge, which would cost about $500,000, would enhance non-vehicle traffic in the area and create a passageway for shoppers to walk from Westpark Plaza to the Crossroads Center, according to a city report.
However, city officials have also said they fear children might try to climb down from the bridge to the creek bed.
