CARSON : Crime Program to Stay Under County Control

City Council members rejected a proposal to move supervision of the city’s crime prevention program from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to City Hall after citizens blasted the idea at Tuesday’s council meeting.
A staff report recommended cutting city costs by about $52,000 by eliminating one of two sheriff’s deputies who run the Community Watch program and hiring a civilian, who would work out of the city’s Public Safety Department, at a salary of $34,160.
Resident James W. Gaines spoke against the change. He said the extra training sheriff’s deputies receive and their knowledge of criminal behavior could not be replaced by a civilian worker.
“You don’t throw away a wheel that’s already invented,” Gaines said.
The Council voted 4 to 0 to maintain the deputy’s position. Councilwoman Sylvia L. Muise-Perez was absent.
