Grumman Suitor Says Northrop Broke Pact: Martin Marietta Corp., whose takeover bid for Grumman Corp. was topped by Northrop Corp.’s $2-billion hostile offer, asserted that Northrop’s bid violated an earlier confidentiality agreement between Northrop and Grumman. In a letter to Grumman, Martin Chairman Norman R. Augustine said the agreement prohibits Northrop from making a bid for Grumman “unless specifically invited” by Grumman to do so. But Grumman said it has complied with the agreement, and Northrop said the pact “became unenforceable as soon as Grumman was put up for sale.”
