She’s Not Hostile to Newport Hostel

* I would like to respond to your article about the proposed Newport Beach Backpacker’s Hostel (“Backpacker Hostel Plan to Be Heard,” April 21).
I am a single mother in my 40s and I have lived in Newport Beach for 34 years. I was privileged to be able to backpack throughout Europe several times in my youth because I stayed exclusively in hostels.
In those days, my budget was $2 a day for food and lodging. If it weren’t for the safety and security of the hostels, I wouldn’t have had the delightful experiences that I did.
I can vouch that there are strict rules and conditions. I vote to give it a chance. We will be giving a few travelers a taste of this beautiful city where they otherwise couldn’t afford it.
