Volunteers to Give Community Projects ‘The Works’

The 2nd annual citywide community service event known as The Works hits the streets Saturday with volunteers to plant trees, read to kids, renovate youth centers and shelters, paint murals and clean up neighborhoods all over Los Angeles.
The Works ’94 is sponsored by L.A. Works, a nonprofit organization committed to revitalizing Los Angeles by making it easy for people to volunteer for community projects.
This year volunteers will work on 40 projects, including painting and renovation at the Berendo Family Center, arts and crafts at the L.A. Boys & Girls Club, food sorting at the Foodbank of Southern California, graffiti abatement and tree-planting. Volunteers will gather at Exposition Park, 900 Exposition Blvd., at 8 a.m. for an opening program and will then be bused to project sites where they will work until about 2 p.m. Lunch and entertainment will follow.
Registration is required. Work-a-thon volunteers are encouraged to collect pledges from sponsors as a way to fund future L.A. Works projects.
