Softball / Pitcher-first base
Villa Park, hoping for a share of the Century League title, needed Foothill to falter last week. The Knights didn’t, but the Spartans came through with two victories to keep the pressure on. McArthur was in the thick of things in both games. She was three for four with a home run and four runs batted in in an 8-2 victory over Santa Ana Valley and pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over Canyon, which knocked the Comanches out of the playoffs. “We needed two wins and she helped us however she could,” Spartan Coach David Shelton said.
Other notables:
* Marcy Crouch, Marina, pitched a one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Huntington Beach and a no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Rosary.
* Angie Fancuberta, Fullerton, pitched two two-hitters--one in a 7-0 victory over Buena Park and one in an eight-inning 2-1 win over Troy.
* Giana Johnson, Laguna Hills, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.58 and the 100 backstroke (57.36) at the Division II swimming championships.
* Erin Powell, Capistrano Valley, finished second in the overall at the section individual gymnastics championships. She won the balance beam.
